Dig!
Directed by Ondi Timoner
To play the industry game, or not to play the industry game? That is the question posed in Dig!, Ondi Timoner's unusually intimate documentary about the linked fortunes of two bands: The Brian Jonestown Massacre and The Dandy Warhols.

Both bands have charismatic frontmen, catchy song catalogs, and an aspiration to greatness. What separates them is their ability to navigate the commercial side of their careers. BJM's musical savant, Anton Newcombe, can play fifty instruments and produce an entire album before lunch, but can't get through an industry showcase without assaulting his bandmates and half the audience. The Warhols' songwriter, Courtney Taylor-Taylor, is not half the talent Newcombe is, but handles A&R men like a savvy industry veteran.

It's not hard to predict who'll come out on top. Timoner follows each band for seven years, during which the Warhols' star ascends—bland hit after bland hit—and the BJM slips deeper and deeper into self-destructive behavior. At one point Newcombe fires virtually everyone in his own group. Meanwhile, the Warhols tour Europe and make videos with David LaChapelle.

Part how-to, part cautionary tale, it's hard to imagine a more thorough and riveting crash-course in Rock 101 than Dig!
